The special edition of PubhD Coimbra “was a great opportunity for an international student”!

The PhD student Emanuel Tahiri, originally from Italy and now in the Doctoral Programme of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine, opened the SPECIAL november edition of PubhD Coimbra. This month, 3 international students walked into a bar and we spoke in english. Emanuel presented his research, with the theme “Cleaning up the mess: the role of Autophagy in Alzheimer's Disease”, which he is developing at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra.

Why did you decide to participate in PubhD Coimbra?

I’ve wanted to participate in PubhD Coimbra since the first time that I had the possibility to see it. But we had to speak in Portuguese. So this edition was a great opportunity, at least for an international student. I know I have to learn Portuguese - that’s true. But I think it is very cool to have the opportunity to talk to the people about our project, and try to simplify it. I think it is a good way to get out of our comfort zone, and try to - not explain - try to pass the message about what we are doing in our life! It is a good opportunity, in my opinion.

How was your experience in this edition of PubhD Coimbra?

I loved it! I loved it! I had the opportunity to speak in English and I love the interaction of the audience - the questions that they made, and it seems that the message passed. So I was very very happy about this. And I think it has been a very good exercise for me.

Would you advise other colleagues to participate?

Yes, sure, of course! I usually recommend it all the time for the people that speak Portuguese. But of course, I will do it now that I have participated - again!
