The project “HIVE - HEI Innovation for Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship”, coordinated by the University of Latvia and with the University of Coimbra as a partner, has received funding of over 1 million euros from the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) to boost innovation and entrepreneurial capacity of higher education institutions, contributing to their sustainable economic growth and competitiveness.

The consortium gathers nine partners from the areas of education, research and business: Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Bulgaria); Coursera (USA); Czech University of Life Sciences (Czech Republic); Essec Business School (France); Riga Stradins University (Latvia); Ted University (Turkey); University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt (Austria); University of Coimbra (Portugal); University of Latvia (lead partner, Latvia).

Luís Simões da Silva, Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, says that the participation in this consortium will allow the UC "to go even further in the field of entrepreneurship, focusing not only on the training of its students but also teaching staff, technical staff and researchers, contributing to the promotion of an entrepreneurial ecosystem that crosses generations. In addition, through the project partners, there will be cooperation and synergies that are expected to contribute to changes in the way entrepreneurship is seen and experienced in higher education institutions".

The project is funded under the “HEI - Innovation Capacity Building for Higher Education” initiative. This funding is promoted by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology with the purpose of supporting higher education institutions in the area of innovation, through expertise and coaching, access to the EIT innovation ecosystem and funding, fostering the development of action and innovation plans that respond to the institutions' needs.
