Regulation of the Laboratory of Geophysics, Geotechnics and Ore Treatment Laboratory

Procedures - COVID19 - Downloadable file - PDF

The Geophysics Laboratory provides support in Applied Geophysics to students, teachers and researchers at the DCT, the Geosciences Center and the Earth and Space Research Center and society in general. The Geophysics Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences at FCTUC is a space where experimental activities related to master's classes are carried out, as well as research related to the development of master's and doctoral theses. Research work is carried out in the laboratory, in tanks to simulate geological structures where electrical resistivity techniques are applied, studying the response of these models. However, the real “laboratory” of geophysical prospecting is in the field, where all methods and techniques can be applied to the most diverse areas of application of geophysical prospecting. These methods are always non-intrusive and non-destructive and their applications range from small-scale structures (archaeology) to large-scale structures (regional geological structures). Laboratory of Geophysics, Geotechnics and Ore Treatment includes four laboratories, the Geophysics Laboratory, the Geotechnics Laboratory, the Sample Preparation and Minerals Purification Laboratory and the Ore Treatment Laboratory.

The Geotechnics Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences at FCTUC is intended for experimental activities integrated in the Master's degree in Geological and Mining Engineering, as well as to enable scientific research by DCT professors, mainly from the Geotechnology group of the Geosciences Center of the University of Coimbra. Although it is essentially a didactic laboratory, it is also capable of rendering services to the community with the preparation of reports and opinions requested by companies, institutions and individuals. The main fields of work are related to engineering geology and soil and rock mechanics.

The Laboratory for Sample Preparation and Mineral Separation of the Department of Earth Sciences (DCT) at FCTUC aims to support the research activities of DCT professors and researchers, students of master's and doctoral courses, taught or supported by the DCT, and the practical classes of the DCT degrees. The laboratory is for the use of all DCT professors and researchers, not belonging to a specific research group, as well as providing support to professors from FCTUC and other universities with which we collaborate.

The Ore Treatment Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences at FCTUC is intended for experimental activities as part of the master's degree in Geological and Mining Engineering and the PhD in Geotechnology (partnership between the University of Coimbra and the University of Aveiro) as well as the to enable scientific research by DCT teachers, mainly from the Geotechnology group of the Geosciences Center of the University of Coimbra. Although it is essentially a didactic laboratory, it is also capable of rendering services to the community with the preparation of reports and opinions requested by companies, institutions and individuals. The main areas of work are related to engineering geology and mineral processing.

Services provision

Geophysical Geophysical consultancy applied to the prospection of geological resources, civil engineering, archeology and the environment, preparing requested reports and opinions, planning Geophysical Prospecting campaigns and collecting, processing and interpreting geophysical data.
Geotechnics

Consultancy, Studies, Opinions and technical reports and Laboratory tests (soils, rocks and aggregates).

The partnerships established, namely with the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra and with the Geotechnics Laboratory of the Pedro Nunes Institute (IPNlabgeo), allow us to provide answers with a wide spectrum of activities in the field of Geotechnics.

Ore Treatment The Geotechnics and Ore Treatment Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Coimbra provides services to the community, namely in the areas of consultancy, studies, opinions and technical reports, laboratory tests and field tests.

Access

The use of the spaces and equipment of the Geotechnology Laboratory (Santander Laboratory - Geotechnics, Ore Treatment, Geophysics, Sample Preparation) in accordance with the respective regulation, requires an access request at least 3 working days in advance, to be made by the DCT teacher responsible for the project using the form.

Note: Bear in mind that, taking into account the circumstances related to COVID 19, the use of the laboratory requires prior scheduling (minimum of 3 working days) as provided for in the above regulation.
