According to Pedro Proença Cunha, professor of Geology at the University of Coimbra and author of the book The Nazare Coast, the Submarine Canyon and the Giant Waves, scientists have not yet been able to understand in detail how the Nazaré Canyon developed at the bottom of the Portuguese sea: “This type of cannons usually exist at the mouths of large rivers, such as the Douro, Sado and Tagus rivers”, he justifies to the Observer.
