DCT collaboration in the 2023/2024 Geology Olympics
The Portuguese Geology Olympiads of the current academic year (OPG 2023/2004) had the collaboration of the Department of Earth Sciences (DCT) of the University of Coimbra (UC).
Throughout the morning of March 16, 2024, teachers, researchers and postgraduate students from DCT developed a set of activities for secondary school students, and their teachers, participating in the regional phase of OPG 2023/2024 held in Coimbra.
The activities developed on topics in the area of Geology, essentially of a practical and interactive nature, were carried out at the DCT facilities and in its external surroundings at Polo II of the UC.
The high diversity of topics covered showed DCT's current technical and scientific skills and capabilities. It allowed, for example, to monitor the planning and flight of a drone abroad to capture images, analyze and survey a rocky outcrop and also measure natural radioactivity in the soil. On the other hand, the activities carried out in the laboratories focused on observing rocks under a microscope, observing fossil samples and also identifying various geological materials and understanding their main practical applications.
The welcome shown by the participants and the good interaction seen throughout the well-filled and busy morning of activities were very gratifying for the DCT team.
