Degree in Civil Engineering and Master in Structures from the University of Coimbra, PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Delft in the Netherlands. Associate Professor with Aggregation, at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Coimbra, where he has taught in the area of ​​structural analysis and design and timber construction. Researcher at ISISE where he has developed research in the areas of timber structures and timber-concrete composite structures.

Deputy Director of the Department of Civil Engineering for the period 2013-2019 and Member of the Assembly of the Faculty of Science and Technology for the 2017-2019 term. Vice president of the SerQ - Innovation and Competence Forest Centre, representing the University of Coimbra. Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra for the 2019-2023 term, with the areas of Heritage and Buildings.

Throughout his career he was the author and co-author of more than a hundred scientific publications in independently reviewed journals and scientific meetings. He participated in more than three dozen National and International Research Projects, having been the Principal Investigator in most of them.

He is a member of several National and International Technical Committees linked to products, construction solutions and structural design in timber. In this context, he is coordinator of the National Working Group on Design Timber Structures and was also coordinator of the European Composite Structures Working Group. He was coordinator of the European group responsible for developing the first normative proposal, at international level, for the analysis and design of Timber-Concrete Composite Structures.
