The University of Coimbra is carrying out initiatives to raise awareness among members of its alumni associations of the importance of patronage support for the António Luís Gomes Social Action Fund, aimed at providing emergency assistance to students in vulnerable economic situations.

The inaugural event, jointly organised by the UC Rectorate and the newly created UC Alumni Association in Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), took place on the 23rd of January in Brussels (Belgium). During the meeting, João Nuno Calvo da Silva, UC Vice-Rector for External Relations and Alumni, called on all UC alumni to "support the solidarity mission of the António Luís Gomes Social Action Fund".

Launched last year as a joint initiative of the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), the University of Coimbra (UC), the UC Social Action Services and the Queima das Fitas Organising Committee (COQF), the fund was presented by the President of the AAC General Directorate, Renato Daniel.

The ceremony was attended by Maria Manuel Leitão Marques, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and UC Alumni Ambassador, as well as the Portuguese Ambassador to Belgium, Jorge Cabral, and the President of the UC Benelux Alumni Association, Rui Faria da Cunha. Carlos Missel, the COQF coordinator, announced the second edition of the 'Alumni Night' to be held on June 1st, with proceeds dedicated to the António Luís Gomes Social Action Fund. The goal is to raise €50,000."
