The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra (JBUC) is organising volunteer activities for UC students willing to help with the garden's daily maintenance tasks (cleaning beds, watering, planting and transplanting, sowing and potting). With no previous experience with plants or botany required, the goal is also to encourage volunteering among the UC student community.

These are "activities that anyone can do in an hour and a half of volunteering," explains Joana Cabral Oliveira, Head of Communication and Education at JBUC, adding that there is always "a short training" prior to each task. "UC students have always been known for developing additional skills and talents" besides their academic career. And that's where volunteering at JBUC comes in, argues Joana Cabral Oliveira. As a Cultural Extension and Training Support Unit, the Garden "wants to help them develop other interests". Besides helping to maintain the space and promoting the Garden's collections, the Botanical Garden's volunteer programme will help to "train students who are committed and dedicated to the areas of sustainability and the environment".

There are weekly shifts, with a limited number of participants (both minimum and maximum). Weather conditions may also affect activities, so be advised to wear suitable and comfortable clothing and footwear.
