The Image of the Garden: 250 years of the UC Botanical Garden in a photo exhibition
"The Image of the Garden" will be on display at JBUC until the 10th of March 2023

The exhibition “The Image of the Garden” portrays the evolution of the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra (JBUC), since it was founded, in 1772. The opening ceremony, which also marks the 250th anniversary of JBUC, took place yesterday, the 5th of December.
"The history of the UC Botanical Garden is full of significant moments", mentioned the director of the Garden, Teresa Girão, at the opening session of the exhibition, further adding that the aim of the exhibition is for visitors to "look at the garden today, and reflect the changes it has undergone since its opening".
Amílcar Falcão, Rector of the UC, stressed that "The Botanical Garden is a magnificent space, with a very important educational feature, especially for the pre-university segment, as well as a space for leisure". The Rector of the UC recalled that the "space for leisure and knowledge" is also "a precious asset of the University". Amílcar Falcão also noted that "the reality of 100 years ago is different from today" and reassured that the UC will "continue to invest in the Garden".
The ceremony included the opening of the Sensory Garden, a new space at JBUC, in which visitors are invited to smell different fragrances, identify different plant textures and rediscover different species used in cooking.
"The Image of the Garden" will be on display at JBUC until the 10th of March 2023, with free entrance, from Monday to Sunday, from 9 am to 5:30 pm.
