Learning Objectives and Skills to be Developed

  • To know the most important aspects of the evolution of sciences, analyzing their development as part of the intellectual and social experience of humanity.
  • To develop advanced research skills in the scientific field of History of Science and Science Education.
  • To promote the acquisition of working methods in accordance with current trends in historiography and pedagogy, with a view to research in national or international units and professional insertion in formal education institutions, Science and Tecnology dissemination, culture and science programming networks (public and private) and other science diffusion and user centres.
  • To identify, preserve and show the Portuguese historical-scientific heritage (museological and documentary).
  • To stimulate scientific reading and writing as well as critical appropriation and deepening of scientific contents, with the development of autonomous research work in multidisciplinary contexts, both national and international.

Addendum This document is an addendum to the cooperation agreement.
Regulation This document aims to establish rules about the organisation, functioning and procedures of the PhD in History of Science and Science Education.

Access and Admission Conditions

In order to enter the Programme, the applicant must satisfy the conditions laid down in national legislation, in the specific rules applicable and, in particular, must respect at least one of the alternatives expressed in the following points:

a. Master's degree, or legal equivalent, in Science Teaching, in History and Philosophy of Science, in Experimental Science or in Human and Social Sciences, or related areas;

b. Graduate , or legal equivalent, and holder of a relevant professional or scientific curriculum vitae, which is recognised as attesting to the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of the Programme;

c. School or professional curriculum that is recognised by the Scientific Committee as attesting to the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

Recognition of Prior Learning

The recognition of prior learning will be made under the terms established by the Study Regulations and PhD Programmes of the UA and UC, instituted by both Decree-Law 74/2006, amended by Decree-Law 107/2008, of June 25, and Decree-Law 230/2009, of September 14, and by the Academic Regulations of the University of Coimbra (Regulation 344/2010, Diário da República, Series II, of April 12, 2010), and by the Study Regulations of the University of Aveiro (Regulation 214/2012, Diário da República, Series II, of June 5, 2012).

Rules for Evaluation and Classification

The Evaluation and Classification Rules are those established by the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra (Regulation no. 344/2010, Diário da República, Series II, of April 12, 2010), and by the Study Regulation of the University of Aveiro (Regulation no. 214/2012, Diário da República, Series II, of June 5, 2012).

Qualification Requirements

The program is composed, in the first semester, of three fixed curricular units in the scientific area of History of Sciences and Scientific Education and one curricular unit of Free Option. The Free Option will be offered by the two universities, from the set of curricular units of the respective graduate courses. The option will be made by the students according to their specific needs for further studies. These four course units make up a total of 24 compulsory ECTS and 6 free ECTS. In the second semester students will carry out a Research Project, corresponding to 30 ECTS. The second and third year of the doctoral programme will be devoted to a thesis, corresponding to a total of 120 ECTS.
