Master in Computational Biology

The Master's in Computational Biology involves 5 departments: Life Sciences, Physics, Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Chemistry and is intrinsically interdisciplinary. It is prepared to receive students with different backgrounds (biologists, biochemists, physicists, mathematicians, ...) and is designed to provide training in Computational Biology appropriate to the student's profile. The training objectives of this master's degree include the acquisition of robust scientific and technical knowledge in the application of Computational Biology to the areas of biology, biomedicine and biotechnology. In particular, this master's student will be able to use and develop computational tools for the study of large amounts of biological data (for example, from genomic or proteomic studies), use computational tools in the development of new drugs, and develop mathematical and computational models capable of simulating biological systems and the development of pathologies, with application in personalized medicine. It is undoubtedly an essential area of specialization today, both in research and in the creation of new quantitative solutions in the business system related to biotechnology.

Testimonials

Rita Ângelo

I recommend the Master's in Computational Biology at the University of Coimbra to anyone who wants to enter the challenging and interdisciplinary world of this growing field. In addition to the comprehensive training, the course has several options when it comes to choosing subjects, so you'll have the opportunity to hone your knowledge according to the area you're most passionate about! Coming from a biochemistry background and having no experience in the computational side of things, it's important to note that during the two years of the master's there is continuous support from the teaching staff, who pay special attention to each student's background. As a displaced student, I can only praise the academic atmosphere in Coimbra and the way I was welcomed by my classmates!
