Participation of the Department of Earth Sciences in the Open Week of the University of Coimbra (2023 edition)

The last edition of the Open Week of the University of Coimbra took place between 27 and 29 April 2023, in Pavilion 1 of the Estádio Universitário de Coimbra, in Santa Clara. The event was a success, not only due to the excellent organization, but, above all, due to the high number of visitors and events held. Of particular note was the participation of numerous students from various levels of education, with emphasis on those from Secondary Education, committed to choosing degrees and higher education establishments where they could continue their studies.

As it should be, the Open Week had the active participation of the Department of Earth Sciences (DCT), through a stand decorated with flags, minerals of economic importance, rocks, fossils, equipment and geological maps, in addition to a PowerPoint slideshow illustrating the courses, laboratories, research centers and other relevant aspects for disseminating the universe of Geosciences in Coimbra. Visitors also had access to a set of offers alluding to the DCT, including leaflets, postcards with chronostratigraphic tables, bookmarks for books on Plate Tectonics, graduated scales for photographs, pencils, cloth bags, etc.

The DCT Geosciences Nucleus was also present, accompanying the dynamics of the stand, participating in the awareness of visiting students and in geocache activities.

Also noteworthy is a very attractive program of parallel activities, which occupied the three mornings and afternoons of the event and was made possible thanks to the effusive dedication of some of our advanced students. Activities on: (1) “Radon and natural radioactivity in Portugal” [Coord. Prof. Alcides Pereira]; (2) “Speleothems: records of climate change and the Earth's magnetic field” [Coord. Prof. Eric Font]; (3) “Geotechnologies with Georadar and drones” [Coord. Doctor João Duarte]; (4) "Cooperation between Geology and the Use of Natural Engineering Techniques in Slope Stabilization" [Coord. Prof. Pedro Santarém]; and (4) “Fossils and Earth History” [Coord. Peter Callapez].

DCT's participation in this annual event was, therefore, very positive, fulfilling the mission of publicizing to attract students, future candidates for our courses, as well as raising awareness of the importance of Geosciences for the community, within the FCTUC itself and from the University of Coimbra.
