Who are we?
Presentation
Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), formerly IBILI, is a Multidisciplinary Research Unit from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC). Research at iCBR aims to i) investigate molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of chronic diseases, ii) identify innovative therapeutic strategies and disease biomarkers, as well as iii) unveil and implement new approaches to promote the quality of life and wellness.
iCBR is organized in five Research Strands devoted to 1) Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases, 2) Neuropharmacology and Neuropsychiatry, 3) Vision Diseases, 4) Environment, Genetics and Oncobiology (CIMAGO), and 5) Healthy Living and Active Ageing. Each Research Strand is headed by a clinical and a fundamental researcher, with the aim of filling the gaps between clinical and fundamental science allowing to tackle biomedical and clinical questions in a comprehensive and holistic manner, from molecule to man, as well as setting the grounds for translational research and technology transfer. iCBR accommodates more than 200 researchers, among scientists and clinicians, with about 100 of them holding a PhD.
Members of iCBR actively participate in Master and PhD Programs, not only from FMUC, but also in Programs from other national and international Institutions. Outreaching activities are, as well, at the DNA of iCBR. Our researchers have an active participation in several initiatives such as the Brain Awareness Week, European Researchers' Night and National Science and Technology Week, among others.
iCBR, together with the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), established the consortium Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) to boost collaborations and leverage the quality of scientific research to levels of excellence.
In summary, at iCBR we provide a vibrant and stimulating environment with state-of-the-art technological facilities aiming at developing cutting edge biomedical research, to be recognized as a reference Research Unit at international level.
