The Strategic Initiative for Pedagogical Innovation aims to approach and prepare schools for current and future challenges, by bringing together the University of Coimbra (UC) with researchers and teachers from partner international institutions, as well as elementary schools and high schools with innovative projects.

Organised by the University of Coimbra in partnership with the STHEM Consortium Brazil, SEMESP, Arizona State University and the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico, the initiative has around 120 participants. Between the 9th and the 11th of January, those present will have the opportunity to participate in round tables and workshops aimed at the teaching community, which will address issues in the scope of pedagogical innovation.

Cristina Albuquerque, Vice-Rector for academic affairs and undergraduate Students Attraction at the UC, says that "Today is a very special day for us. We believe that reflection and a well-founded paradigm shift in teaching and learning models are an essential step towards establishing the school's values".

The goal is to take the "first step in building an international ecosystem of teacher training in the scope of pedagogical innovation as a way of building the school of the future". For the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão, "education, first and foremost, is freedom. Education is citizenship. Education is knowledge". He also argues that "the goal is to prepare responsible adults capable of living in democracy and freedom".

With the quality of teaching at the top of the agenda, the launch of the Strategic Initiative for Pedagogical Innovation also included the signing of bilateral agreements for strategic collaboration between the University of Coimbra and several higher and secondary education institutions. "The involvement of national and international partners is a decisive factor for the success of what we envisage", adds the Rector of the UC.

The Strategic Initiative for Pedagogical Innovation is supported by the RRP - Recovery and Resilience Programme and is aimed at the whole teaching community.
