Duarte Nuno Vieira, Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), has been awarded the Human Rights Award by the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS). The award was presented during the opening ceremony of the Association's 23rd Triennial Congres which is being held in Sydney, Australia, with the presence of more than 1,700 forensic specialists from 76 different countries. The prize was awarded to the University of Coimbra (UC) Professor in recognition of his "outstanding contribution to the application of forensic sciences in the promotion and protection of human rights". Among the many awards with which he has previously been honoured, Duarte Nuno Vieira also received the Clyde Snow Award in 2020 from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, an award that recognises an outstanding career in the field of Humanitarian Forensic Action and the global promotion of human rights through the use of forensic science, thus becoming the first international expert to receive these two prestigious awards, which had previously only been awarded to the Forensic Unit of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
