Historical Note

The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences is one of the most recent organisational units of the University of Coimbra which is more than 700 years old (the oldest Portuguese university and the fifth European university according to the date of its foundation) and was recently recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Patrimony.
The historical roots of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences date back to 1911/1912, when Pedagogy and History of Pedagogy began to be taught in the University of Coimbra within the scope of the course of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Qualification Course in Elementary Education.
In the academic year 1976/77, the Higher Education Course in Psychology was established for the first time in Coimbra, being its temporary headquarters in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. On 5th November 1980, by means of the Decree-Law no. 529/80 the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (FPCE) was founded.

In October of 1985, the Faculty of Psychology moved to his current location, at Colégio Novo stret, developing now their currnt pedagocical and cinetific activities in three buildind: Building 1 (Colégio Novo street), where the multiple Faculty services are lcoated, building 2 (Pólo I, by the Dom Dinis square) with most of research units and structures and Sacadura Botte Palace, destined mainly to post-graduated classes and cinetifical eventes realization.

As of today the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences offers Integrated Master`s Degree in Psychology, two 1st Cycle Studies courses (Educational Sciences since 1990 and e Social Work since 2005), as well as masters, doctorates and post graduations in all three cientific areas it tecahes.

Regarding internationalization Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences has mobility agreements with many prestigious international universities and institutions and offers a Master's Degree in Psychology of Work, Organizations and Human Resources supported by the Erasmus Mundus Programme.
