Theoretical background

Self-harming behaviors (SHB) consist in a cluster of acts in which the individual harms him/herself, including a continuum of suicidal ideation, suicidal attempt and suicide.

The manifestation of self-injurious behaviors (CAL) is frequent in prisons. The incidence of CAL in prisoners is significantly higher than in the general population. However, their research has been scarce in this context.

The Self-Injurious Behavior Scale (ECAL; Ferraz & Simões, 2015) is a self-report questionnaire that allows the assessment of CAL in inmates.

Description

Assessment Domain: Self-harming behaviors.

Type of Instrument: Self-report questionnaire.

Dimensions

The ECAL consists of 49 dichotomous response items (yes/no) and allows obtaining results for six factors (suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, self-mutilation, parasuicide, psychopathology and isolation). ECAL contains items that are directly and inversely priced. The quotation of the ECAL and the relevant factors is performed through the sum of all the resulting items (total) and the items that resulted from each factor. ECAL has good psychometric qualities in terms of accuracy and concurrent criterion validity.

Studies

The validation study protocol includes the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire – Revised (EPQ-R; Eysenck, Eysenck, & Barrett, 1985; Portuguese version by Almiro & Simões, 2014), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II); Beck, Steer & Brown, 1996; Portuguese version by Oliveira, Simões, & Paúl, 2014) and the Social Desirability Scale (EDS-20; Almiro et al., 2017).

The sample consists of 120 male participants, aged between 19 and 77 years (M = 36.00; SD = 10.69), mostly of Portuguese nationality (n = 113; 94.16%), coming from the Coimbra Prison and the Leiria Regional Prison. These participants were convicted (n = 102; 85.00%) or in preventive detention (n = 18; 15.00%) for crimes related to drug traffic, theft and robbery.
