Theoretical background

The EPQ-R is based on the well-known H. Eysenck’s P-E-N Model (or Big Three). The personality is defined as the stable and enduring organization of a person’s “character”, “temperament”, “intellect”, and “physique”, which determines his unique adjustment to the environment.

The Neuroticism dimension assesses the continuum between the neurotic personality (or emotionally unstable) (anxious, depressed and moody individuals) and the stable personality (even-tempered, controlled, and cheerful individuals). The Extraversion dimension assesses the continuum between the extrovert personality (sociable, active, and outgoing individuals) and the introvert personality (introspective, quiet, and reserved individuals). The Psychoticism dimension assesses the continuum between the psychopathology (aggressive, unadjusted, and non-empathic individuals) and the adjusted personality (empathic, conventional, and impulse controlled individuals). The L scale (Lie/Social Desirability), which is a validity scale, measures the social desirability construct and it is useful to examine the level of sincerity of the responses on the questionnaire (presence/absence of socially desirable answers).

Description

Assessment Domain: Personality.

Type of Instrument: Self-report questionnaire

Number of items: 70 items, dichotomous (Yes/No).

Application: Individual or group, 10-15 minutes.

Population: ≥ 16 years old (adolescents, adults, and elderly).

Dimensions

The EPQ-R examines the three fundamental dimensions of personality: Psychoticism (P), Extraversion (E) e Neuroticism (N). This questionnaire contains a Lie/Social Desirability scale (L).

Studies

The Portuguese version of the EPQ-R has studies with community samples (normative study) and in the clinical and forensic contexts (validation studies).

The research of the EPQ-R has begun in 2007 and it was supported by a PhD scholarship granted to Pedro Almiro from Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) [SFRH/BD/37970/2007].

Future research

The Portuguese version of the EPQ-R can be provided for an exclusively research purpose. PsyAssessmentLab© is available to actively collaborate in any research projects related to this instrument or any studies including its use in the clinical and forensic assessment contexts, or in other contexts.
