Theoretical background

The TEXI is a rating scale that measures everyday executive functioning in adolescents aged 13-19 years. It measures two executive functions (working memory and inhibition) that are relevant to the regulation of behavior and the adaptative response to various environmental demands. The everyday executive functions rating scales (e.g., CHEXI, ADEXI, TEXI, and BRIEF) show a collinear relationship with measures of behavior exhibited by children, adolescents, and adults in different contexts. Studies demonstrated that TEXI has adequate psychometric properties, and it is useful for the understanding of adolescents' executive functioning.

Description

Assessment domain: Executive functions. Psychological assessment.

Type of instrument: Self-report and informant-report (parents and teachers).

Number of items: 20 items, Likert scale with a 5-point scale (ranging from “Definitely not true” to “Definitely true”).

Administration: Individual or group, 5 minutes.

Population: Adolescents (self-report and informant forms).

Dimensions

The TEXI consists of 20 items organized into two factors: Working Memory (9 items) and Inhibition (11 items).

Studies

The TEXI is translated and/or validated in some countries (e.g., Netherlands, England, Portugal, Sweden, and Turkey). The findings confirm the robustness of its psychometric properties.

Future Research

Future studies with TEXI will include factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity analysis. The Portuguese version of TEXI can be used in clinical evaluations and for research.
