Theoretical background

The QL was designed to obtain a measure of the literacy throughout the assessment of the frequency of some activities related to reading and cultural habits, complex activities of daily living that requires cognitive engagement and professional activities. The literacy has been explored as a variable with an active contribute to the cognitive reserve, since this characteristic remain dynamic throughout life, even after the conclusion of the formal education. There are currently a considerable number of studies that use literacy as a valid indicator to estimate the cognitive reserve.

Description

Assessment Domain: Cognitive reserve.

Type of Instrument: Self-report questionnaire or interview, two parallel versions: (i) for close informants/caregivers and (ii) for the patients.

Application: Individual, 10 minutes.

Population: Adult and elderly.

Studies

The QL was originally developed within the project “Aging and Cognitive Decline in the Portuguese Population: Incidence, profiles, risk and protective factors” (IF/FCT/01325/2015: PI Sandra Freitas), including the development of the experimental study, the pilot study (N=202) and the conclusion of the final version.

Currently, there are in course normative, psychometric and clinical validation studies (with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s disease patients) of the QL for the Portuguese population.

Future research

PsyAssessmentLab is available to actively collaborate in any research projects related to this instrument, including normative and validation studies.
