Theoretical background

BRIEF2 assesses behaviors associated with executive functions, as they express themselves in the home and school environments, and it is designed for parents, teachers., children and adolescents.

The usefulness of the BRIEF2 has been shown in a broad range of disorders, such as Specific Learning Disabilities, low birth weight, Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder, Tourette syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injuries, lead exposure, developmental disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, depression, anxiety and epilepsies (Gioia et al., 2000, 2015). Another BRIEF2 advantage lies in its ecologically validity, i.e., in the assessment of executive functions as they manifest themselves in daily life.

Description

Assessment Domain: Executive functions.

Type of Instrument: Self-report questionnaire.

Number of items: 55 items (self-report form), 63 items (parent form and teacher form).

Application: Individual, 10-15 minutes.

Population: 10-18 years old (self-report form), Adult (parent form and teacher form).

Dimensions

There are three different forms of the BRIEF2:

  • Self-Report Form: is completed by a child or adolescent (aged 10-18 years, in the Portuguese version), contains 55 items and assesses the perception of the examinee’s own executive functioning. The Self-Report Form contains seven scales: a) Inhibit; b) Self-Monitor; c) Shift; d) Emotional Control; e) Task Completion; f) Working Memory; and g) Plan/Organize. The scores of two of these scales constitute the Behavioral Regulation Index, the scores of two other scales compose the Emotional Regulation Index and the scores of the remaining three scales compose the Cognitive Regulation Index. The three Indexes constitute the Global Executive Composite.
  • Parent Form and Teacher Form: are completed, respectively, by parents/guardians and teachers of children and adolescents, aged 6-18 years (in the Portuguese versions) and assess their perceptions regarding the executive functioning and cognitive, emotional and behavioral self-regulation of their children or students in daily situations. The 63 items of each of the versions are organized in nine scales: a) Inhibit; b) Self-Monitor; c) Shift; d) Emotional Control; e) Initiate; f) Working Memory; g) Plan/Organize; h) Task-Monitor; and i) Organization of Materials. Similar to the Self-Report Form, the Parent Form and Teacher Form allow the calculation of an Behavioral Regulation Index, an Emotional Regulation Index and an Cognitive Regulation Index. The three constitute an overall summary score, the Global Executive Composite.

Items in any of the versions are rated according to a 3-point Likert scale (i.e., 1 = "Never"; 2 = "Sometimes"; 3 = "Often"), which indicates the frequency of behaviors in the last 6 months.

Studies

Studies are underway that aim:

  1. to develop norms representative of the country, according to the age and gender of children and adolescents, and regarding the 3 versions of BRIEF2;
  2. to determine the reliability of each of the 3 versions of BRIEF2, in terms of internal consistency and agreement between raters;
  3. to analyze the validity of BRIEF2 in community samples and clinics.

Funding

The studies are funded by Hogrefe and by the Center for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive and Behavioral Intervention (CINEICC), of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences – University of Coimbra.
