Theoretical background

The European Portuguese WHOQOL-OLD module consists of 28 items rated on a five-point scale covering 7 facets (4 items each): the six original facets of Sensory abilities (assesses sensory functioning and the impact of impairments on daily activities; items 1, 2, 3, 20), Autonomy (refers to independence in old age and thus describes the amount of being able to live autonomously and take own decisions; items 4, 5, 6, 11), Past, present and future activities (describes satisfaction about achievements in life and at things looking forward to; items 12, 13, 15, 19), So¬cial participation (delineates participation in activities of daily living, especially in the community; items 14, 16, 17, 18), Death and dying (related to concerns, worries and features about death and dying; items 7, 8, 9, 10), Intimacy (assesses opportunities for companionship and love; items 21, 22, 23, 24); and the European Portuguese culturally relevant facet of Family/family life (assesses satisfaction with family support, time contact, relationships and the sense of worth within the family; items 25, 26, 27, 28).
