Theoretical background

The BES is a 20-item self-report measure designed to measure two dimensions of empathy in adolescents: affective empathy (11 items) and cognitive empathy (9 items). Each item is rated on a 5-point ordinal scale, from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree. Higher scores indicate higher levels of empathy. In the present validation study, the short version of seven items called BES-A was used, which maintains the two-factor structure.

Description

Assessment Domain: Empathy.

Type of Instrument: Self-report questionnaire.

Number of items: 20 items.
