Theoretical background

The SD4 is a short self-report measure of the Dark Tetrad model of personality. It encompasses four factors with seven items each (total of 28items), namely: Narcissism, Machiavellianism, Psychopathy and Sadism. All SD4 items are formatted as 5-point Likert scales with anchors 1 (= Strongly disagree) and 5 (= Strongly agree). Factor scores are attained by summing the respective items; the use of a total score is not recommended. An elevated prevalence of these dark traits is reflected in higher scores. Reliability for the Portuguese version, measured by Cronbach´s alpha, was Narcissism = .81, Machiavellianism = .79, Psychopathy = .87, and Sadism = .82).
