Theoretical background

The Child Routines Questionnaire: Preschool (CRQ:P; Wittig, 2005) is an analogous version of the Child Routines Questionnaire (CRQ; Sytsma et al., 2001) developed to be used with children from 1 to 5 years old. It assesses typical child routines “defined as observable, repetitive behaviors which directly involve the child and at least one adult acting in an interactive or supervisory role, and which occur with predictable regularity in the daily or weekly life of the child” (Sytsma et al., 2001, p. 243). Early childhood routines typically include: hygiene, dressing, mealtime, and bedtime.

Routines play an important role in providing structure in daily family life. Empirical research has emphasized the association of children’s routines with positive parenting practices, psychological adjustment (externalizing and internalizing behavior problems), academic skills, and social skills.
