As the majority of course units are conducted in Portuguese, Erasmus students are strongly advised to take the OLS preparation course available online (access is provided by the home institution). Non-Portuguese speakers can also take the “Portuguese Language Erasmus” semester course, as long as they include it in their Learning Agreement when applying for mobility. They can also attend the Intensive Language Preparation Course at the beginning of each semester, in September and February (enrolment subject to fees).
A number of course units is also offered in English and, in most cases, exchange students can make arrangements with lecturers in order to be allowed to do examinations or submit assignments in English (or other language, if both parts know it).
Modern Language studies are usually half taught in Portuguese, English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish and Italian.
Language and culture courses
The Language Centre of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of UC offers a wide variety of opportunities to improve students’ language proficiency in Portuguese and other languages, from European to Asian languages. These courses are lectured by native speakers.
The final evaluation of a course unit is expressed through a classification on the numerical scale from 0 to 20 points, considering approval to obtain a minimum of 10 points, as well as its equivalent on the European classification scale (ECTS Scale).
The mention of approval "AP" associated with a result of accreditation in substitution of a numerical classification on the scale 10-20 refers to an exemption from carrying out the course unit or credits in a given scientific area. It was considered as done for the purpose of determining the conclusion of the course but it was not considered in the calculation of the final grade.
The final classification of the course is expressed in the range 10-20 of the entire numerical scale from 0 to 20, as well as in its equivalent in the European ECTS scale. The final classification is calculated through the average weighted by the number of ECTS of each result of approval eligible for the determination of the conclusion of the course.
The final classification of the course can be accompanied by a qualitative mention, expressed in the following scale: Sufficient (10 to 13), Good (14 and 15), Very Good (16 and 17) and Excellent (18 to 20).
The ECTS scale is based on the association of a numerical definition (percentile), with steps A, B, C, D and E, according to the following table.
ECTS Classification | Successful student obtaining this classification (%) |
A | 10 |
B | 25 |
C | 30 |
D | 25 |
E | 10 |
The classification obtained on the ECTS scale is based on the distribution of results in the range 10-20 obtained by all students in a course unit or in the final classification of the course corresponding to the three academic years prior to the result considering a minimum of 30 approved or graduated students. Whenever it is not possible to obtain the minimum number of elements in the distribution, the previous four or five academic years are considered until the distribution is at least 30 elements. In the distribution of results, only scores obtained by evaluation are considered. Whenever it is not possible to obtain the minimum number of elements in the distribution or the grade awarded is a credit, the classification is assigned according to the table below, contained in letter No. 11196 of the General Directorate of Higher Education.
ECTS Classification |
E | D | C | B | A |
Definition | Sufficient | Average | Good | Very Good | Excellent |
Grade(10-20 Points) | 10-11 | 12-13 | 14-15 | 16-17 | 18-20 |
Incoming Mobility- Traineeships
All mobility students must be nominated by their home coordinators, regardless the mobility programme they are applying for or even if there is a bilateral agreement established between the UC and the Home Institution.
If there is no official nomination, which can be done by e-mail, we cannot accept your application nor can we register you as a student of the FMUC.

Placements/Traineeships
Please read carefully the application guide and check the list of ISCED codes (subject areas) before starting your online application.
Please note: if your University is not in the list of agreements available, you should contact us at: grii@fmed.uc.pt
Application deadlines for all students:
- Application deadline for one academic year or first semester: 1 March to 15 July.
- Application deadline for the second semester: 1 September to 15 December.
Incoming students are allowed to perfom one or more traineeships at the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC).
If the student is coming under the ERASMUS Programme, he/she has to accomplish a minimum period of 2 months, according to the ERASMUS rules.
If the student is coming under an existing bilateral agreement, we recommend a minimum period of 1 month (4 weeks).
If applying under the Free Mover Programm, the student must be enrolled in one of the following disciplines:
- Clinical Traineeship for Foreign Students I (8 ECTS)- corresponds to a mobility duration up to 3 months
- Clinical Traineeship for Foreign Students II (16 ECTS)- corresponds to a mobility duration between 3 and 6 months
- Clinical Traineeship for Foreign Students III (32 ECTS)- corresponds to a mobility duration between 6 and 12 months
Free Mover students are required to pay fees to the University of Coimbra, which at the Faculty of Medicine is of 80 euros per credit. You will also have to pay for school insurance and tax registration (amount approved yearly and published in Official Journal)
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra does not require a language certificate, but highly recommends the student to have a basic knowledge of the Portuguese Language, in order to be able to follow the traineeships at the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre. We recommend at least level A2. Nevertheless, the student may attend the traineeships in English, depending on the Department he/she wants to attend.
