Exchange Programmes
The FMUC participates in several programs that allow the student to carry out a study/internship mobility period in institutions around the world.
Available programs:
The Erasmus+ Program is the European Union program for Education, Training, Youth and Sport, which runs from 2014 to 2020. This program replaces the former Lifelong Learning Program which covered the Comenius, Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci and Grundtvig sub-programmes.
Erasmus+ now integrates the following three actions:
KA1) Mobility of individuals for learning;
KA2) Cooperation for innovation and sharing of good practices;
KA3) Support for political reform.
It is within the scope of the KA1 action that mobility is found for students, recent graduates, teaching and non-teaching staff in Higher Education.
The FMUC students can therefore apply for the following mobility programs within the scope of the ERASMUS+ Programme:
• Mobility for studies;
• Internship mobility for students;
• Internship mobility for recent graduates.
Mobility for studies:
Opportunity to carry out a period of study, with full academic recognition (recognized as an integral part of the study program at your institution of origin), through the ECTS Credit System, with a duration ranging from 3 full months to 12 months, in a higher education institution in another country eligible for the Program. A student interested in participating in this program can attend the FMUC if there is a bilateral ERASMUS agreement. At the end of the study period, the student will receive from the FMUC a certificate of attendance and successful completion of the agreed study plan (Transcript of Records). The student selected to carry out an ERASMUS+ mobility will always have the status of “ERASMUS student”.
Mobility for internships:
Within the scope of the Erasmus Internship, a student can carry out a mobility period in a company, hospital, university, research centre, in one of the eligible countries, provided that the institution is recognized and approved by the ERASMUS Departmental Coordinator, with a minimum duration of 2 full months and a maximum of 12 months.
A student interested in doing a curricular internship can apply, during the pre-registration period, for registered vacancies (they can be consulted in the "Norms and Rules" tab), which were previously defined in the bilateral agreements between the FMUC and the partner institutions.
In case the student intends to carry out the mobility in an institution without registered vacancies, the student is responsible for contacting the FMUC in order to obtain the letter of acceptance. The student can only start the application process when he/she presents the official acceptance by the host institution.
Mobility for recent graduates:
A finalist student can undertake an internship, within the scope of mobility for internships, in the immediately following academic year.
In this case, the student is also responsible for contacting the FMUC, in order to obtain the letter of acceptance and can only start the application process when presenting the official acceptance by the host institution and if approved by the ERASMUS Departmental Coordinator.
Mobility duration:
For each study cycle, the student can carry out a mobility period (both studies and internships) for a maximum of 12 or 24 months, including the internship period as recent graduates.
Medical students can carry out a mobility period at the FMUC, with which the University of Coimbra has an institutional agreement.
The possibility of carrying out mobility outside Europe is viable as long as there is an Institutional Cooperation Agreement with the University of Coimbra.
Thus, in addition to Europe, the University of Coimbra is actively involved in international scientific and academic cooperation through the establishment of specific Cooperation Agreements between universities and research institutes around the world, such as the USA, Brazil, Switzerland and Argentina, among others.
It should be noted that the agreement is at the institutional level (between Universities) and without vacancies bilaterally agreed, so the fact that there is such an agreement does not guarantee the possibility of the student being accepted for mobility.
An application under the Agreements Program does not exempt the consultation with the FMUC of the possibility of accepting or not the student to carry out mobility.
You may consult the UC's International Cooperation Agreements at "Norms and Rules" tab.
This mobility programme is addressed to Portuguese students only, who intend to carry out a mobility period at the Portuguese Medical Schools.
