Biomedical Engineering

The teaching of Biomedical Engineering in Portugal began in 1992 with the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. The first cycle of higher education in this area appeared at the University of Coimbra in 2002 after the approval of the creation of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering on January 23, 2002, which was later converted into an Integrated Master's Degree. In 2020, these two cycles were once again separated into a Bachelor's and a Master's degree, in the current model of educational provision in this area, where around 300 students are regularly enrolled.

Bachelors

The Biomedical Engineering degree aims to provide a solid basic education in structural areas such as physics, mathematics and biomedical sciences, in addition to specific areas of Biomedical Engineering, and to develop skills for further study and eventual entry into professional practice.

The student will have a broad education in Biomedical Engineering that will allow them to pursue advanced training in various areas of specialization. They will also obtain the necessary skills and theoretical and laboratory training to enable them to start working in areas related to Biomedical Engineering.

The main career paths are those of senior technicians in the field of Biomedical Engineering and related areas. Graduates in Biomedical Engineering are prepared to perform functions in the area of technology applied to Health, such as the development of basic instrumentation, the development of simple software and the application of biomaterials.

Testimonials

Henrique Costa

The Biomedical Engineering degree at the University of Coimbra provides all the materials for a student to succeed, as in addition to teachers with an impressive portfolio, we are provided with all the essential materials for good learning. Thus, throughout the 3 years of the degree, students are able to acquire very important foundations that will be needed later on. It's also important to mention the academic spirit in Coimbra, where there is a huge spirit of mutual help between students, which contributes greatly to their collective success.

I couldn't be happier with my decision to come and study in Coimbra.

Masters

The Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering aims to train professionals with high technical and scientific qualifications, capable of applying the concepts and techniques of Engineering to the analysis and solution of problems in the fields of Medicine, Biology and Health. They are professionals capable of carrying out research and/or innovation work in advanced technologies related to Biomedical Engineering, in an industrial, clinical or laboratory context, with a high degree of autonomy.

Emphasis is placed on the specialization areas of Imaging and Radiation, Biomedical Instrumentation, Biomaterials, Neurosciences and Clinical Informatics and Bioinformatics.

The main career opportunities are in health-related technology companies, ranging from the development of biomedical instrumentation to the use of biomaterials, medical imaging technologies, the use of radiation in diagnosis and therapy and the development of data acquisition and analysis software. Biomedical engineers are mainly recruited by medical instrumentation and pharmaceutical material companies, clinics and hospitals, research and development laboratories, consultancies and software development companies.

Testimonials

Eva Anjo

The master's degrees available for Biomedical Engineering are multifaceted and very promising, since they offer a certain degree of freedom that allows any student to specialize in various areas that may be of interest to a biomedical engineer, providing a very complete and enriching education. Furthermore, studying in Coimbra, and in particular in the Physics Department, is always an asset, as this is a place that always strives to welcome students in the best possible way and introduce them to Coimbra's traditions and the academic spirit that is so characteristic of us.

To study in Coimbra is to experience the best the university has to offer.

PhD

The PhD in Biomedical Engineering is designed to provide advanced training in the area of Biomedical Engineering and to prepare doctoral students for research and development work in the area of Health, namely in the innovation and optimization of methodologies and equipment for diagnosis and therapy.

The student is integrated into research centers, companies or clinical units representing the various areas of Biomedical Engineering in which excellent research is carried out at the University of Coimbra.

This specialization is always associated with a high degree of demand, imposed by the multidisciplinary and interface nature of Biomedical Engineering, and is an important asset for doctoral students, in addition to its potential social impact.

The main career opportunities are working in biomedical product or service companies, research and teaching in the scientific areas that support biomedicine.
