Plate Tectonics, Continental Crust, and Paleogeography

Seeks to unravel the geological processes that have shaped the lithosphere over time.Through multidisciplinary approaches and multiscale observations, it contributes to interpret:

i) The secular evolution of plate tectonics;

ii) Paleogeography and supercontinent cycles;

iii) The formation and evolution of mountain belts.

Paleoclimate, Paleoenvironments, and Species Adaptation

Tackles the intricate evolution of terrestrial ecosystems and how life forms, fromindividual species to entire ecosystems, have responded to shifts in climate and geodynamic forces.It also conducts comprehensive surveys of sedimentary basins to assess paleoenvironmentalconditions and tectonic histories and explores resource prospectivity. Focus areas include:

i) Paleoclimate evolution and changes;

ii) Sedimentary basin analysis,

iii) Paleobiology andtaphonomy;

iv) Major extinctions.
