Crises (staseis) and changes (metabolai): the Athenian democracy in contemporary Times

Project Reference: FCT/CAPES 2019-20

This project aims to explore the concept and founding experience of democracy in classical Athens, examining its literary and political reception up to the presente day. Furthermore, it centres around the identification of a specific issue: the need for critical studies, within the Lusophone world, on Athenian democracy as a living, evolving practice with problems, marked by 'staseis' (crises) and 'metabolai' (changes). These studies seek to elucidate how the solutions and strategies from Athenian democracy continue to inform contemporary reflections on social, intellectual and ethical-political challenges within contemporary democracy. To achieve this goals, the project intends to publish scientific articles in internationally renowned journals, fostering collaboration between seasoned researchers and emerging scholars. Additionally, it plans to host events where Brazilian and Portuguese researchers can convene to discuss ongoing research and exchange ideas.
