The University of Coimbra announces a call for 3 research fellowships within the framework of the research and development unit “Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos (CECH)” (reference: UIDB/00196/2020), funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), through national funds (PIDDAC), under the following conditions:

Scientific Areas: Social Sciences and Humanities - Classical Studies and History.

Skills/Qualifications/Admission requirements: Graduates enrolled in Master's courses in the area of social sciences and humanities, preferably: Master's in Classical Studies and Master's in History.

Note: Candidates need not be enrolled in a degree programme at the time of application. However, proof of enrollment must be presented until the fellowship is contractualized. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enroll in the training offer. Candidates who are already enrolled compete on an equal footing with those who are not yet enrolled.

Work Plan/Objectives: Research to be carried out as part of CECH's complementary projects: Artes Docendi, Rewriting the Myth and General Project, with the aim of developing in-depth research and knowledge transfer activities for civil society.


Within the scope of the Projects:

  1. Artes Docendi: development of workshops aimed at primary and secondary school students, as part of the Ludi Conimbrigenses knowledge dissemination activity (1 grant);
  2. Rewriting the Myth: collecting and inserting data on classical theatre performances in contemporary Portugal: Thespis - CECH (1 grant);
  3. General Project: transcription and edition of manuscripts from the documentary collection of the Colégio de Jesus (Coimbra) (1 grant).

Regime: The scholarship does not generate or establish a legal-labour relationship, and requires exclusive dedication. The scholarship holder is awarded the Fellowship Statute of the UC, according to the Research Fellowship Holder Statute and the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, both in their current wording.

Location: University of Coimbra. Duration: 8 months.

Renewal: Potentially renewable, with all renewals subject to alternative budget allocation.

Scientific Orientation: Carmen Isabel Leal Soares and Maria Margarida Lopes de Miranda.

Financial Conditions: The fellowship amount is € 990,98 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table, plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance. The payment shall be issued by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased throughout the entire duration of the fellowship.

  • Absolute merit of the Curriculum Vitae (50%)
  • Specific knowledge related to the work plan (20%)
  • Graduation average (30%).

Formalization of Application: All of the following documents must be submitted via the Apply UC portal:

  • Motivation letter;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Certificate of qualifications.

In addition to this, a declaration of honor must be submitted, indicating the candidate’s fellowship(s) of the typology of the contest and respective duration(s).

The aforementioned declaration must be formalized in a proper form at the Apply UC platform.

Applicants with academic degrees obtained abroad will be required to present a Certificate of Recognition in accordance with applicable law. This document is mandatory only during the contractualization phase.

Additional Information: The evaluation results will be announced within 90 working days following the submission deadline, via email notification. Following the announcement, candidates have a 10-day period to provide comments, if desired. Subsequently, selected candidates must confirm their acceptance in writing. Failure to do so within the referred timeframe will be considered a waiver of the fellowship, unless a valid justification is provided. In the event of resignation or withdrawal by the selected candidate, the next candidate with the highest evaluation score will be notified immediately.

Upon completion of the selection process, the fellowship contract will be prepared in accordance with the draft contract provided by the FCT.
Following the contracted period, the fellowship holder and supervisor must prepare the final report in accordance with the respective assessment criteria that were established.
