PhD CS

It is intended with the PhD in Classical Studies to specify subjects explored in the existing Master’s in Ancient world, Classical culture and Poetics and hermeneutics, as well as complement an advanced training in the field of classical studies to candidates from other areas (Modern literatures, History, Philosophy and Law), in aspects related to the history of ancient cultures (thought, society, politics and culture). To reflect on the aesthetic phenomenon and the hermeneutic potential of the text and on the role of classical studies and the indispensable character that the knowledge of antiquity, active and facilitator of an intercultural dialogue, assumes on the world today.

Goals

  1. know the matrices of Greek-Roman and neo-Latin culture as the basis of European cultures;
  2. identify institutions and political, social and economic structures of the Greek and Roman states and their impact on the concepts of citizenship, and on the subsequent constitution and governing experiences;
  3. know the aesthetic options of the main authors of the ancient world and their reception contexts;
  4. be aware of the context in which antiquity reflected on ethos and human actions, within the community;
  5. learn to reflect on the mimetic-representative density of mythos in the context of art and life;
  6. deepen knowledge and experiences in methodologies to promote cultural and civic intervention actions, in order to develop professional activity in this area;
  7. independently plan and develop research and present conclusions in the form of an original and scientifically well-supported dissertation.
