University of Coimbra professor receives 2023 Aurora Pons Porrata Award

The international award is presented annually to a woman researcher in recognition of an outstanding scientific contribution in the fields of pattern recognition, data mining and related areas.

Bernardete Ribeiro, a retired full professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), has received the Aurora-Pons Porrata 2023 Award from the International Pattern Recognition Association (IPRP). The award was presented at the closing ceremony of the 26th Ibero-American Congress on Pattern Recognition.

The Aurora-Pons Porrata is an international award presented annually to a woman researcher in recognition of an outstanding scientific contribution in the fields of pattern recognition, data mining and related areas.

Bernardete Ribeiro is a professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering (DEI), FCTUC, former Director of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC) and former President of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP). She is a senior member of the CISUC Adaptive Computation Group and Founder and Director of the Laboratory of Artificial Neural Networks (LARN) for over 25 years.

The DEI Professor's research interests fall into the areas of machine learning, pattern recognition, financial engineering, text classification, signal processing, and their applications across different fields.

Doctor Ribeiro is currently the local coordinator of the Centre for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CR-AI), associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, and one of the 47 UC scientists on the Stanford University list of most-cited career-long researchers.
