The Sustainability Network for Higher Education Institutions in Portuguese-speaking Countries and Regions has just been launched, with the University of Coimbra (UC) as a founding member.

Thirty-four higher education institutions from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Macao, Mozambique, Portugal and East Timor have expressed a strong interest in joining the network. Higher education institutions are thus at the heart of the process, given their role in educating future generations and their mission to produce knowledge and technology, and should be leading examples of sustainability for society. Portuguese-speaking countries and regions provide a unique platform for promoting sustainability at a global level, based on a network of institutions and organisations advancing higher education in the Portuguese-speaking world in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe.

The institutions that make up this brand new sustainability network are committed to building sustainable societies by aligning their activities with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda and, where possible, coalescing around a set of six principles: institutional commitment, promotion of sustainability ethics, acting for sustainability, knowledge dissemination, collaboration and partnerships, and technology transfer.

The launch of the Sustainability Network for Higher Education Institutions in Portuguese-speaking Countries and Regions took place on the 22nd of November at the 13th FORGES (Forum for Higher Education Management in Portuguese-speaking Countries and Regions) Conference.
