On the 24th, 25th and 26th of November, the Department of Earth Sciences (DCT) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) will host another edition of the International Fair of Minerals, Gems and Fossils, at the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra.

The 2023 edition will feature an array of national and international exhibitors of collectors' minerals, gemstones, fossils, educational materials and handcrafted jewellery, as well as the 1st Meeting of Mineral, Gem and Fossil Collectors.

The fair will also feature the presentation of the book "A Mina em que Vivemos" (The Mine We Live In) by Sofia Pereira, a researcher at the Geosciences Centre of the University of Coimbra, with illustrations by Alexandra Couto, and educational activities for younger audiences and schools. There will also be a lecture called "Trilobites of Portugal: from Minho to the Algarve", by researcher Sofia Pereira.

Gustavo Gonçalves Garcia and David Silva, organisers of the event, say: "The International Minerals, Gems and Fossils Fair is an opportunity for everyone to enter this natural universe and get a glimpse of the geological diversity on display, whether by collecting, buying or just visiting".

According to the organisers, "the variety of pieces attracts a wide range of collectors and anyone can buy items from countries such as Afghanistan, Brazil, China, Mexico, Namibia and Portugal. In addition to gems and crystals of rare aesthetic beauty and collector interest, there will also be, as in previous editions, a wide variety of fossils documenting the different ages and environmental conditions in the history of the Earth through which organisms have evolved".
