University of Coimbra consolidates its leadership as the most sustainable institution in Portugal

UC is the best Portuguese higher education institution - and 181st in the world - in the sustainability indicator of the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings 2025.

The University of Coimbra (UC) has once again been recognised as the Portuguese higher education (HE) institution that contributes the most to tackling the world's biggest environmental, social, and governance problems. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025, a prestigious ranking published this Tuesday (4 June), the UC is the best Portuguese university - and 181st globally - in the sustainability indicator. The University of Coimbra (UC) has once again been ranked as the Portuguese HE institution that contributes the most to solving the world's biggest environmental, social, and governance problems. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025, a prestigious ranking published this Tuesday (4 June), the UC is the best Portuguese university - and 181st worldwide - in the Sustainability indicator.

Ranking 355th globally (out of more than 1,500 participants), the UC also stands out in the indicators 'International Research Network' (154th) and 'Citations per Faculty' (264th).

The Sustainability indicator confirms the University of Coimbra's national leadership in this domain, once again ranking among the top 200 in the world (as was the case in the previous edition of this and other prestigious rankings).

The QS WUR 2025 is the result of a performance evaluation of 1,503 higher education institutions according to nine indicators: Academic Reputation (30%), Citations per Faculty (20%), Employer Reputation (15%), Faculty-student ratio (10%), Employment Outcomes (5%), International Students ration (5%), International Faculty ratio (5%), International research network (5%) and sustainability (5%).
