To mark International Microorganism Day, the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) is organising the event “Come and learn all about my pet microorganism” from the 15th to the 17th of September. The initiative will take place at “Exploratório Centro Ciência Viva de Coimbra”.

On the 17th of September 1683, the current date of International Microorganism Day, Anton van Leeuwenhoek sent a letter to the Royal Society of London reporting the first observation of a microorganism. Since that day, we have known about the ubiquity and abundance of microorganisms all around us. And today we are certain that they are essential tools for solving society's major problems.

In this 7th edition, participants will have the opportunity to speed-date with microbiologists from Coimbra, observe microorganisms in microscopes and Petri dishes, play educational games, debate the latest scientific and technological advances in microbiology, among other activities. The Pet Microorganisms exhibition is also available online, with photographs of microorganisms in Petri dishes, and testimonials from researchers.

The initiative "Come and learn all about my pet microorganism" is co-organised by FCTUC and the Faculties of Pharmacy and Medicine of the University of Coimbra, with the participation of the Vasco da Gama University School, the University of Coimbra Bacteria Culture Collection (UCCCB) and "Exploratório Centro Ciência Viva de Coimbra".
