UC student Arthur Jorge Correa won the "Student Simulation Contest", promoted by the American company Simio, with the participation of thousands of students from all over the world. Arthur studies at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC).

Within the scope of this international competition, the student of the master's degree in Industrial and Management Engineering has developed a model in the area of sports logistics regarding the assessment of operations and logistics in football matches. "The goal was to simulate the operations in a football stadium with a seating capacity of 5,000 people, which had many problems. There were long queues, for example, which caused low fan satisfaction, as well as low profit levels, because with long queues the fans ended up giving up using the available services", Arthur Jorge Correa explains.

In order to solve these problems, the student designed a base model for implementing measures to improve operations, profits and fan satisfaction using the Simio simulation software.

Arthur says that "having participated and won this competition is great for the curriculum, but it is also important to boost competition and of course, to learn more about simulation, as it is an area in which I would like to work in the future".
