UC professor receives honorary doctorate from the University of Pécs

Maria Miguéns Pereira (Mariette Pereira), professor at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), has just been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Pécs, Hungary. The official ceremony will take place this Thursday, 9 November, at 10h00, one day after she will give a lecture on her research work.

The FCTUC lecturer obtained her doctoral degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Coimbra (UC) in 1992 and was an Assistant Researcher at the University of Liverpool in 1993 and at the Autonomous University of Barcelona between 1997 and 1998. She was the Director of the Chemical Research Laboratory of Luzitin Lda, a pharmaceutical spin-off, until 2015. She is currently a full professor at the UC and has developed close ties with the University of Pécs.

Mariette Pereira's research focuses on the development of asymmetric catalysts and sensitisers based on tetrapyrrolic macrocycles for biomedical applications. She has published more than two hundred articles in international journals, three books and 25 book chapters, and has participated in 6 world patents. In 2022, she was awarded the Tremplin-Mariano Gago Prize by the French Academy of Sciences.
