The UC-Life Sciences Awards, an annual initiative of the Department of Life Sciences (DCV) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), honoured three female scientists this year.
The awards ceremony, attended by FCTUC Director Edmundo Monteiro and DCV Director Miguel Pardal, took place this afternoon, 28 June, in the Department of Life Sciences auditorium.
Ana Beatriz Caniceiro, a researcher at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC), received the prize in the Biochemistry category for her scientific article "MUG: A mutation overview of GPCR subfamily A17 receptors"; Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal.
In the Anthropology category, Ângela Bessa, a researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE), the Forensic Anthropology Laboratory and DCV, received the award for her scientific publication "A soil-based approach on human taphonomy from five Portuguese public cemeteries"; Australian Journal of Forensic Sciences.
Isabel Silva, researcher at DCV, CFE and Laboratório Associado Terra, received the award in the Biology category for her article "Microplastics accumulate priority antibiotic-resistant pathogens: Evidence from the riverine plastisphere"; Environmental Pollution.
The UC-Life Sciences Awards recognise early career researchers and are awarded in three scientific fields (biochemistry, anthropology and biology) to master's and doctoral students.
