The University of Coimbra (UC) has been ranked as the 138th best university in Europe, according to the new Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Europe University Rankings (published on Wednesday, the 20th), which assessed a total of 690 European higher education institutions (HEIs).

In this continental ranking, published for the first time by Quacquarelli Symonds, the University of Coimbra ranked 27th in the Inbound Exchange Students indicator, which measures the proportion of international students attending the university for at least one semester.

In addition to ranking 53rd in the Papers per Faculty indicator (which measures each institution's scientific output and number of publications), the University of Coimbra also reinforced its status as Portugal's most sustainable university, with the best score among all national HEIs, ranking 70th (based on the QS World University Ranking 2024 scores published earlier). The Sustainability metric measures the social and environmental impact of institutions in promoting a more sustainable society.

The QS Europe University Ranking 2024 evaluates European higher education institutions according to 12 metrics in five main areas: Research and Discovery, Employability and Outcomes, Learning Experience, Global Engagement and Sustainability. In this first edition, the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) tops the list.
