UC in the Top 140 European Higher Education institutions

The University of Coimbra (UC) was considered the 138th best higher education institution (HEI) in Europe in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2025, published on Wednesday, the 10th of July. Launched last year, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) continental ranking assessed more than 680 HEIs from 42 countries, with the UC outperforming all national competitors in the sustainability indicator.

The QS World University Rankings: Europe 2025 assessed European higher education institutions (HEIs) on 12 indicators in five key areas: Research and Discovery, Employability and Outcomes, Learning Experience, Global Engagement and Sustainability.

In addition to its overall ranking of 138th (as in the previous edition), UC stood out among the top 50 European institutions in the indicators Exchange Students (24th), which assesses the number of incoming and outgoing students in mobility programmes, and Papers per Faculty (36th), which analyses the number of scientific publications to evaluate the productivity of researchers.

In this ranking, the University of Coimbra also consolidated its status as the most sustainable institution in Portugal: the UC achieved the best result in the Sustainability indicator, which measures institutions' social and environmental impact in promoting a more sustainable society (81st).

In this edition of the QS World University Rankings: Europe, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich claimed the top spot, followed by Imperial College London in second place and the University of Oxford in third.
