The University of Coimbra (UC) is a finalist in the 10th edition of the International Green Gown Awards 2024, in the Benefiting Society category for its work in welcoming and integrating refugee students.

The International Green Gown Awards recognise sustainability initiatives and entries are judged by an international panel that analyses how institutions develop innovative initiatives and community engagement. The projects' proactivity, innovation and social nature are also considered.

In addition to supporting and managing the academic costs through the Refugee Support Fund, created and financed by its revenues, the UC promotes the reception and integration of these young people by mobilising the various aspects - academic, social, cultural - of its supporting structures, including a prayer room and religious services.
Refugee support at the UC is a joint effort involving various University structures, the academic community and partnerships with external organisations.

The UC helps to strengthen not only European policies and support, but also national policies. The main objective is to bridge the gap between locals and migrants, facilitate mutual understanding and promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
The University of Coimbra is currently hosting more than 70 students from 15 different nationalities in emergency situations for humanitarian reasons.

The International Green Gown Awards have the support of the United Nations Environment Programme and aim to recognise outstanding sustainability initiatives by higher education institutions worldwide that meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The first round of finalists includes 95 projects from 61 institutions in 28 countries across 8 categories. Results will be announced in October 2024. Get to know all finalist projects here.
