The 2023/24 academic year officially began at the University of Coimbra (UC) with the traditional Solemn Opening Ceremony.

The Rector of UC, Amílcar Falcão, recalled that "the dynamism that comes with the constant renewal of talents and ideas is crucial for an academic community whose commitment is to add to the legacy of those who preceded us, continuing to strengthen a university that is unique in Portugal and abroad", adding that the UC is "on the right track" to remain " at the forefront of global research universities". Alongside emphasising the importance of "focusing on people, on their appreciation and quality of life", Amílcar Falcão added that "welcoming and integrating the new students who have chosen the University of Coimbra for their higher education has been a priority".

João Caseiro, president of the Directorate-General of the Coimbra students union (Associação Académica de Coimbra - AAC), took the floor to remind us of the creation of the "António Luís Gomes Social Fund", which will "support students from this academic year onwards". Caseiro pointed out that " social services are a concern of the UC" and that this fund will complement other existing support programmes, both at national and academic level".

In addition to speeches by the Rector of the UC and the President of the AAC, the ceremony ended with the Sapiencia Lecture by Luís Simões, Full Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the UC.
