The University of Coimbra publicly presented the ten winning projects of the 4th edition of the 'Initiative for the Promotion of Scientific Culture' (which sponsors interdisciplinary scientific and cultural communication activities) on Monday, the 13th of May, at the UC Exploratório - Centro Ciência Viva of the University of Coimbra.

The initiative funds ten activities/initiatives that promote the dialogue between science and culture and the dissemination of knowledge produced at the University to a non-academic/scientific public. Organised by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra (IIUC), the awards aim to promote dialogue between science and culture. According to João Ramalho-Santos, UC Vice-Rector for research, " With these awards we want to reach a wider audience".

The 4th edition selected projects "from all scientific fields", as João Ramalho-Santos points out. "It's part of our mission as a higher education institution to reach out to different audiences, to interact with different types of communities and to make people understand a little better what we do," he stresses.

The Vice Rector for Culture, Communication and Open Science, Delfim Leão, also highlights the "unlikely links" that this concept has created, as it "promotes interdisciplinarity between research centres" and "the transfer of knowledge to a wider audience". Ten of the 20 applications received that have been selected will - throughout the year - "promote scientific culture as a whole and also establish the link between doing science and doing culture," Delfim Leão says.
