Portuguese and French universities celebrate 25 years of collaboration in Mechanical Engineering
The event will be held in Lorient, France, and can be attended online.
On the 4th and 5th of July, the Universities of Coimbra, Bretagne Sud and Aveiro will celebrate 25 years of collaboration in mechanical engineering. The celebrations will take place in Lorient, France, and will also be streamed online.
The programme will include a brief history of these 25 years of collaboration, scientific talks on plasticity model calibration with artificial intelligence, and challenges in virtual sheet metal forming, among others. There will also be a global session to honour Professor Frédéric Barlat and a panel discussion with PhD students who have completed their scientific training within this collaboration, and who will share their experiences.
"It all started with a close friendship between three PhD students (Luís Menezes, Sandrine Thuiller, and Pierre Yves Manach), and this year we are celebrating 25 years of intense and fruitful scientific collaboration. In 1999, we decided to set up a collaboration between Coimbra and Lorient, France, which quickly brought together my research team at the time and that of Lorient," recalls Luís Menezes, Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC).
The researcher at the Centre for Mechanical, Materials and Process Engineering (CEMMPRE) adds: "From that moment on, we applied for bilateral cooperation programmes, which made it possible to fund mobility between the two cities. This collaboration soon extended to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro, where I was the doctoral supervisor of some of my colleagues," he says.
For the FCTUC professor, "celebrating 25 years is an important milestone. The future depends on the younger generations, whose scientific training has already resulted from this collaboration initiative, which will continue to create and share scientific knowledge," he concludes.
