Researchers from CEGOT / University of Coimbra (FLUC, UC_D) have participated in the development of a new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on Urbanisation and Health - Promoting Sustainable Solutions. This course has been developed in partnership between the University of Copenhagen, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the University of Coimbra, with support from the EIT Health.

More than half of the world's population now lives in cities, up from 5% in the 18th century. Rapid urbanisation has brought with it inadequate infrastructure, physical inactivity, gentrification, air pollution and a growing number of slum dwellers. These are all factors that affect the health and well-being of people living in cities.

In this course, students will learn about the key determinants of urban health, including demography, climate change, air pollution, noise, transport systems, public, blue and green spaces, and policies and investments that affect sense of community and public safety. Students will be given a historical overview of the major trends in urban planning and will meet a range of urban planning stakeholders who will provide examples of innovative methods and people-centred approaches to creating sustainable solutions. Finally, students will be provided with a set of resources to inspire them to help create awareness and action around an idea or sustainable solution in the field of urbanisation and health.

The course is already available on Coursera
