The Alliance for Healthy Ageing (AHA) and the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal) will host a mini-symposium under the theme of stem cells in ageing and metabolism.

The scientific event, entitled "Stem cells in Aging and Metabolism", will take place at Hotel Dona Inês, in Coimbra, on the 4th April. Registration runs until the 18th of March and is limited to the capacity of the room. More information and registration at: https://www.uc.pt/mia/mia-portugal-ageing-spring-school/programme/#4th-april.

The event brings together renowned scientists and leaders from research centres in Europe and the United States to provide an in-depth debate on the topic. Paul Robbins - Director of the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism (University of Minnesota); Moustapha Kassem - University of Southern Denmark; Eugene Berezikov - ERIBA - European Research Institute for the Biology of Aging (University of Groningen) and Laura Greaves - Newcastle University, join leaders of research groups from the University of Coimbra (UC) to discuss the therapeutic possibilities of stem cells in diseases associated with ageing.

The symposium "Stem cells in Aging and Metabolism" precedes the MIA Portugal Spring School, which will gather from the 4th to the 8th of April, in Coimbra, young Portuguese and foreign scientists with promising curricula. This Spring School is an intensive training programme organised by MIA-Portugal, led by the UC, and will feature experts from the Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota, ERIBA, Newcastle University, and UC researchers with consolidated activity in aging biology.

MIA-Portugal is the first research centre in Southern Europe dedicated to the study of the biological and molecular bases of ageing. The Institute results from a European partnership, led by the University of Coimbra, and involving the University of Newcastle (UNEW, UK), the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG, NL) and the Instituto Pedro Nunes - IPN, with the support of the Mayo Clinics (USA) and the University of Copenhagen (DK).
