Today, 6 June, marks the second anniversary of the GreenLabs initiative of the Centre for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CiBB), an R&D unit that brings together the Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC), the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) of the Faculty of Medicine of the UC, the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal) and the Gene Therapy Centre of Excellence in Portugal (GeneT).

In order to contribute to sustainable research practices, CiBB, as a research and innovation centre of public interest, has been running a Green Lab since 2022. This initiative promotes the implementation of day-to-day sustainable practices in research laboratories to reduce carbon and energy footprints and mitigate the environmental impact of research, with the clear objective of protecting the environment.
These practices are implemented without compromising research quality, excellence and safety.

CiBB took up this commitment to implement sustainable practices and reduce its environmental footprint by becoming a member of the Portuguese Network of Sustainable Research Laboratories - Green Labs Portugal (GLPT) in March 2022. Later that year, the Portuguese network became a member of the European Sustainable Labs Network - SELs Network.
