The University of Coimbra (UC) celebrates its 734th anniversary on Friday, the 1st of March, with the solemn ceremony of University Day at the Great Hall of Acts - Sala dos Capelos. The event begins at 15:00 and includes the UC Prize award to Francisco Pinto Balsemão.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on www.uc.pt/emdireto and will feature speeches by Isabel Marques Carreira, Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and member of the UC General Council [on behalf of the Council's President, Gabriela Figueiredo Dias]; the Coordinator of the UC Workers' Committee, António Trindade; the CEO of Santander Portugal, Pedro Castro e Almeida; the winner of the UC Prize, Francisco Pinto Balsemão; and the Rector of the UC, Amílcar Falcão. The UC Prize will be presented by Francisco Veiga, Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and member of the General Council of the University of Coimbra.

The ceremony, featuring the traditional presentation of doctoral certificates to the University's new PhD graduates and a tribute to recently retired UC staff, will also have a significant addition this year. For the first time, there will be a tribute to the new Emeritus Professors—an honorary title recently created to recognise UC professors and researchers for their outstanding work and achievements in the academic and scientific fields, as well as their contribution to the national and international prominence of the University

The nine recently appointed UC Emeritus Professors are Ernesto Costa, Helena Gil, Mário Krüger, and Teresa Mendes (Faculty of Sciences and Technology); Carlos Reis and Fernando Catroga (Faculty of Arts and Humanities); José Nascimento Costa and Manuel Santos Rosa (Faculty of Medicine); and Luísa Morgado (Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences).

The programme for UC Day 2024 will also include the inauguration of the new UC Tourism Kiosk in the atrium of the Departments of Chemistry and Physics at 6 pm, followed by the Solemn Mass in St. Michael's Chapel at 6:30 pm.

At 9:30 pm, the Academic Orchestra of the University of Coimbra will take the stage at the Gil Vicente Academic Theatre to perform the opening concert of the XXVI UC Cultural Week, ‘Vox Symphonica.'
